Breed History

Schipperkes originated centuries ago in the Flemish provinces of Belgium and may be descended from a black sheepdog native to that region.

Because they were frequently seen on the barges of Belgium, Schipperkes were given the nickname of "Little Captain" and have often been called the Belgian barge dog. However, the name may have originated from a less romantic Flemish name meaning "demure sheepdog."
